Debian 13 Trixie release information for FreedomBox

Debian 13 “trixie” was released on August 9, 2025. FreedomBox has an option to automatically update to the next stable release. For FreedomBox systems that had this option enabled, they would have been updated to Trixie in early September. Otherwise, the Distribution Update can be started manually from the FreedomBox interface.

Several apps that were available in Debian 12 “bookworm” are not available in Debian 13 “trixie”. Here is the list of apps, and possible replacement options:

  • Janus: Replacements include audio/video calling over Matrix or XMPP, or audio calling over Mumble. This app will likely become available in future again. It may be possible to use the package that is in Debian testing/unstable, with some risk of breakage.

  • TT-RSS: There is a fork of the discontinued upstream project, but the Debian package is not kept up-to-date. It is recommended to migrate to Miniflux or Nextcloud News, and to uninstall TT-RSS. (Tiny Tiny RSS app is no longer available, please migrate)

  • Searx: There is no replacement currently, and the upstream project has been discontinued. It is recommended to uninstall Searx. There is an upstream fork called SearXNG, but it is not packaged into Debian yet. Users with more technical knowledge may be able to install it manually on top of FreedomBox.

SearX(NG) is irreplaceable one. I will try to install it.
