WordPress Theme Installation fail

I have a fresh and updated setup. Added the WordPress app. Tried to install a new theme (Appearance/Themes/Add themes) but get error message: “Installation failed: Could not create directory.”

WordPress allows me to select FTP/FTPS/SSH2. I select SSH2 because SSH is enabled by default on FreedomBox. I can connect to the box via ssh.

Same problem when trying to update a plugin: “Update failed: There has been a critical error on this website. Please check your site admin email inbox for instructions.Learn more about troubleshooting WordPress.”

Most probably a permission issue, can someone reproduce and suggest a workaround/solution?

Theme and Plugin upload support for WordPress is still in the works and will hopefully work in a future update. For now you need to install them manually (and not WordPress interface).

Related to this, I am having trouble with the Akismet plugin saying it needs updating from V4.1.9 to V4.1.12 after following the installation instructions link you provided above. It shows the updated version and is using it after activating it in the WP admin plugins page, but does not allow me to delete the old version, V4.1.9.
