[SOLVED] Auto and Manual updates fail

Noticed there were some errors, had a look and found that some auto-updates had I think, I’m no Linux expert. Tried to run the updates manually, doing the Security updates first, then All updates, several times each, have also rebooted the several times, but always fails. I have 3 apps installed, Bepasty, samba and Navigator, as per screenshot. Bepasty, Samba and Navigator are still working. Can anyone help with this please.

Cant see any way to add my screenshots.

Thanks Avron, I have added soem screen shots.

Correction, It would only allow me to add 1 screenshot.

How do you know that it failed? Is there something shown in a log, or are some packages still pending to be updated?

Can you take a screenshot of the “System->Update” page (from plinth, the default interface, not from cockpit)? This is to see which options are selected for updates.

Also, click on the “Show journal from last update” at the bottom of the page and paste here the text that appears.

Hello AllanJD,

Your logs show this error:

cp: error writing ‘/boot/firmware/initrd.img-6.1.0-16-arm64’: No space left on device

It appears that the boot partition of your FreedomBox is out of space, likely due to old kernel images accumulating. To clear these out and potentially free up some needed space, you can run:

sudo apt autoremove

This command will remove unused kernel images. This step is generally enough to resolve the space issue in the boot partition and allow your FreedomBox updates to complete successfully.

However, if the errors persist, please share the most recent logs.

I assume this is a raspbi.
Try to follow @fefekrzr 's guide to autoremove

If it won’t work, try to list existing kernels with

dpkg --list | grep linux-image

From this list you can manually uninstall old kernels with

sudo apt purge linux-image-6.1.0-x-arm64

See also https://ostechnix.com/remove-old-unused-linux-kernels/ for other ‘one-liner’ methods for removing old kernels - not that I’ve tried any.

I do not recommend using below method and maybe only as a last resort.

If above doesn’ work, manually deleting the old versions of vmlinuz-6.1.0-x-arm64 , initrd.img-6.1.0.x-arm64 and config-6.1.0-x-arm64 under /boot with sudo rm will free up space (x being old version number).

On the last resort option, if anything goes wrong or you mistakenly remove wrong files, you may not be able to boot back into your FBX or may loose future kernel auto upgrades. So, make sure you have your raspbi close-by for local connection and have you data backed-up on another drive.

Hi fefekrzr and Ged296123

Thank you very much for helping me with.

All sorted now.

'm really glad to hear that your issue has been resolved!

If you don’t mind, could you please prepend [SOLVED] to the title of your original post? This small action helps others in the community quickly identify solutions to similar problems they might be facing.

Thanks, and great to know everything’s working well now!

Hi fefekrzr, sorry bit I can find no way of editing the title.

I am glad your issue is solved.

One remark: on the Software Update page, “Enable auto-update to next stable release” is selected. As it is now, at the next change of Debian stable version (in 2024 or in 2025 I guess), your freedombox will immediately migrate to that version.

Last time this happened (in 2023), everyone’s freedombox was partially or fully non-functional, it took a bit of time to find out what to do to fix this. Perhaps the next stable version upgrade will be smoother, perhaps not. By having the option selected, you are some kind of “early tester”. If you prefer to only migrate when you decide (e.g. after solutions to upgrade issues are well described), you should unselect that option (the second one).
