Should I be worried to upgrade from 24.25?

Not wanting to sound like some hopeless complainer here, because I really do have so much gratitude for this project!

The reason I ask this way, is because its been running in various states of broken-ness. Certbot doesn’t work anymore, I can’t install new apps, and there are various other anomalies happening, and really I don’t like making changes to things in general because I know things break.

I have downloaded several backups. Would by chance configs from apps on the 24.25 version have a chance at restoring on a freshly installed and up to date FB?

The problems I mentioned have already been worked on for many hours with no success, so I prefer to do nuke and pave at this point, if that may prove to be the path of least resistance and some decent chance of success at not having to reconfigure everything again? *Which isn’t the end of the world btw.

Thanks for this Amazing Project! <3

In general, the Backups app restores your apps quite well. I’ve nuked my FreedomBox a couple of times and recovered without major issues.

That said, you shouldn’t have to be “running in various states of broken-ness”.

Have you made a lot of manual changes to your box?

Re: Certbot

In your post, you never replied to James Valleroy, who was trying to help you. We could try and troubleshoot that with you.

Also, you haven’t shared this information in your post:

Information

  • FreedomBox version: (from Help → About page)
  • Hardware: (name of single board computer or server hardware with architecture)
  • How did you install FreedomBox?: (‘bought pre-installed hardware’ or ‘apt install freedombox’ or ‘downloading testing images from https://freedombox.org’ or ‘using a cloud image’)

Having this information would help contextualize your setup (except the FB version which we now know).

Try running the commands and answering the question that James Valleroy posted in his reply to your post.

Another helpful thing might be running a full diagnostics checkup. Sometimes your issue could be caused by a failure in another app or with your setup.

You say that you “can’t install new apps”, which is odd and could be caused by a myriad of different issues, like low storage, DNS problems, misconfigured sources file, etc.

I understand not wanting to nuke your install, but, also, it sounds like you are not able to use your FB to its fullest. Reinstalling from scratch and recovering is not a huge deal, but might be a bit annoying.

To start, would you mind sharing your diagnostics and setup info?

Thanks for your reply. I’ve been down this road before and I just can’t remember the details, but the theme is that nothing useful came from the logs.

I can manually start Certbot, then after some time it stops, and looking in the logs just shows whats in the screenshot. No exit code indicated.

Taking the path of least resistance I think I will just have to install a new and updated instance of FB and will very selectively restore some of my configs.

The version I’m on is in the title of this post, and the hardware config / how it was installed is not relevant. I have it running on my Proxmox server with 4 CPUS, 8GB RAM, and 1 TB SSD allocated. Most resource usage I’ve seen is in the 40 percent range at the most.

I have to think I must have broke something along the way, but I don’t keep a changelog for FB, so its difficult to say. But also, some things have always been buggy from the beginning, and I know some things were just broken from the start, acknowledged by various known issues on earlier versions of FB.

I think this FB was first deployed in late 21 or early 22.

I know this project is improving and I will tread more carefully on the next install.

Thanks again for your reply.
