I just wanted to provide a brief update, in case you haven’t heard or seen: Matrix Synapse is installable again and works fine, with some limitations. I set up a fresh trixie system last weekend, activated backports, updated freedombox to 26.10 and restored the Matrix App from a backup I made on bookworm. Worked like a charm, all data and config back in place.
Sadly, audio and video calls are not working yet, if you plan on using Element X as a client on Android/iOS, because of this issue here. But I am confident Livekit gets implemented sooner or later, so in the meantime I just use the classic Element client or Element WEB for audio/video calls, both over Coturn as it used to be.
I really like the new Element X mobile client because it made a lot of things somewhat easier to handle and configure. This is especially important for people that might want to change from big tec to free software but expect the same usability, a modern design and a “works out of the box” start.
Additionally: the new sliding sync feature really is a big gamechanger, there are no more loading times at all in Element X, despite my lower powered hardware (Pioneer Edition)!
