Feed Profile To Vpn Client

Hello I’m new here,

I purchase Freedom-box many months ago and I’m still trying to figure this thing out. Just how do I import or add the profile client I downloaded on my desktop? I downloaded my profile but the directions don’t go into any details on the next step required and what to do with the profile? I open it now what do I do with it? Need more info please to get OpenVpn Connection established. Below is what I’m receiving from the OpenVPN GUI 11.24.0.0/2.5.

Thanks,

What are you running on your desktop? On my desktop (Debian Buster/GNOME 3.30.2), it’s by navigating to Settings>Network and clicking on the “+” sign next to “VPN” that I get an “Import from file…” option that allows me to select the profile previously downloaded from my Freedombox to my desktop.

I’m running Windows 10 on a Lenovo Desktop Computer–Cable Modem 60mbps with dd-wrt Linksys Router and a Arris Modem. The Freedom Box is connected to a extra internet plug in into the switch box.

Your downloaded profile contains “freedombox” as the domain name of the server. You can try changing this to IP address of the FreedomBox machine, by editing the profile using a text editor.

However, assuming you want to use the OpenVPN server from outside your home network, you will need to setup a proper domain name. You can use the Dynamic DNS for that. You also need to expose the needed ports in the router. Once that is done, enter the domain name in the System → Config. Re-download the OpenVPN profile. This time it will have the proper domain name inside the profile.

@lifeform , I don’t think GNOME’s network manager UI has yet fixed the issue with importing the OpenVPN profile properly. It will not import the public/private keys. It is best to import using the nmcli command line as specified in the manual page.

Also if all else fails, there is WireGuard. Now that we have moved to Debian bullseye, it is available to everyone.

Well, I just know I wanted to run a VPN service on my system using Freedombox and a app some how or which one would work best and easier to setup. Not using an outside source. Thanks for the feed back.

Give WireGuard a try. It is simpler and considered by many as more secure.

I meant in my earlier post that if you ever need to travel outside your home network with mobile phones/laptops and want to connect to your home freedombox (to route all your mobile phone traffic through freedombox at home), then you need to setup a domain name.
