I would like to propose a future app addition for Pinimatic. This would be nice to have a self hosted pinterest like application for digital collections.
Welcome @dcabend!
There are some options. Let me briefly explain FreedomBox first, and then I’ll tell you ways you can proceed.
FreedomBox is what’s called a Debian pure-blend. What this means is that FreedomBox is made entirely of software packages distributed by Debian. Every piece of FreedomBox comes from the Debian stable distribution (now called “Trixie.”)
- What’s good about this: it’s predictably reliable
- The down side: a package not distributed in Debian doesn’t get built into FreedomBox.
You can still run this on FreedomBox. You’ll need to work through the Pinimatic installation instructions on Debian. There may be someone who has already solved this problem if you ask the Pinimatic community.
The slower option is to start a discussion with the Pinimatic devs about getting Pinimatic included in Debian. This is not a trivial task - but would be necessary to have Pinimatic built into FreedomBox one day. This is a long term plan.
My suggestion is to just give it a go and work with the Pinimatic community to figure out any steps to get this onto a Debian system and then you’d be hosting the app on your FreedomBox. I see their instructions refer to Ubuntu which will be similar in many ways to working with Debian and FreedomBox. In some cases you can just install a Ubuntu package onto FreedomBox - I’m doing this today with a program not included in Debian. It will not be insurmountable to get this running on FreedomBox if you do the installation on your own.
We’ll be pleased to see some screenshots of that when you get it working!
