Can ping but getting "this site cannot be reached" errors

Freedombox (latest stable) on Lime2 board: my router sees the device, and I can ping the device. However, I am unable to get to the FB web interface: any browser I use throws : The site cannot be reached error".

On my router I have enabled http, https and ssh ports.

The FB has been in use about 4 years, lately it started disconnecting from my network. I have rebooted it a few times. I also recently burned the latest version of FB stable to the SD card, hoping this would solve the problems.

I suspect a hardware fault in the device but do not want to recycle it until I am sure.

Is there any way I could do more testing by simply plugging this directly into the Ethernet port of my Linux desktop and doing some network analysis directly to the FB?

Any assistance appreciated.

Hi @rocdoc54

You’re having trouble connecting with a browser, and your device appears to be online. I would first try to confirm whether the web browser connects at all. Try this fake link that will not resolve and see if that is the same error you see when trying to connect to freedombox…

http://fakefreedombox.local/freedombox

If your error is different your browser may be making some sort of connection to freedombox.

Next I’d look at apache log entries and see how that looks. Hopefully you can still ssh to freedombox. If so, try this command which may show you web server errors in the log:

sudo journalctl -b0 -t apache-access -t apache-error | more

There could still be something going on between those two. dmesg may be helpful to spot a hardware problem.

sudo dmesg | more

This is where I’d start. Failing that, maybe confirm that you don’t have a duplicate ip address on your network. That’s unlikely if you get your IP address from DHCP.
