Adding programs on freedombox same as other distributions?

in general is freedombox nothing different than any other debian distribution? Can you compile and install software on freedombox? Can you install 3. party program packages? Or will that result in corrupting freedombox? Thank you.

Yes, @kotiv, you can install packages from the Debian repository or compile and install software from source. With my system I try to be cautious not to install a package which overlaps with those selected by FreedomBox. I like NTP, for example, but FreedomBox uses SNTP for time synchronization. So in this case I leave it alone, even though I like the other method better - just to live in harmony with FreedomBox.

I have set up CUPS on FreedomBox before and had no issues.

When you install (or compile) a package it may not fully integrate with the FreedomBox web UI. That interface is part of the FreedomBox application and does not automatically add the new apps to the FreedomBox launcher. But, of course there is a way! If you look through the Support forum there are some good threads on FreedomBox theming and integrating other applications with the FreedomBox Apps page. You can take this as far as you care to.

This thread is what I was thinking of, @kotiv. You will find discussion about adding your preferred apps to the FreedomBox app launcher page.
