Status - Updating

Is what you showed before the last line of the update logs?

It looks exactly like what I saw at some point in my logs, but some further things happened after that. Can you report similar information as I did in Upgrade to Bullseye - #14 by Avron?

Where do you see the status as “updating”?
Besides that, are there non-functional things?

Everything seems functional but nothing seems updated.

There is a new stable pioneer image here:
https://ftp.freedombox.org/pub/freedombox/pioneer/weekly/

Joseph reported on IRC that it works on Pioneer (Lime2 rev G2) and also Lime2 rev K.

Thank you!
It works perfect and faster than the old one. I’m very happy with the new apps: wordpress and wireguard. I also saw that there is an email server app but it’s hidden. How can i run it?

Email server is under active development. It should be available in a few weeks.

Thank you! I’m looking forward for it!

But it’s not stable. Almost every day I lost connection with the server and I have to restart it manually from the power cable. I don’t know the reason. After that it works for a while until the next time.

Perhaps related: Battery required to keep my FreedomBox running - #3 by hfelton

In the past two days my FreedomBox Pioneer Edition has become inaccessible twice (no local access, no ssh, ping did not work). To get it back online, both times I unplugged my FreedomBox, let the battery power run out, and then plugged it back in. (I was too lazy to open the box to manually to unplug the battery, and I was unsure how to use the hardware reboot/shutdown buttons.)

I’ve tried both - with and without battery, and it’s the same. Now I just keep it detached for easier reset. It’s very annoying. With last version it’s been running for months without any need of reset. I don’t know what is the problem.

Hi @johnny,

After upgrade, I faced a similar problem. When I tried debugging with a serial cable, it indicated towards processes getting killed over insufficient memory. I have disabled a couple of services on my FreedomBox (I run quite a few). Since then it has been stable, I will continue to report if I face the issue. Could you try this as well?

I have a few applications. When this started I had installed only matrix, wireguard and WordPress. Now I have these plus bepasty and calibre.

Matrix is known to be somewhat heavy depending on federation, room quantity/size. If you can afford to, could you please try disabling Matrix Synapse for a few days for the purpose of debugging this issue?

OK, I will report after few days without matrix.

I switched off matrix and for one day had no problems. I will keep it off for a few more days, then on, to see what will happen. Meanwhile, I saw my logs and I think that my FB is under brute force attack. Could this cause overloading and shutting down the server? Also, I want to add that with previous version (buster) I had turned on matrix and almost half of the other available apps and had no problems. Just notifications for low memory, but never shuts down. And how to prevent this password guessing attacks (if they exist, and they aren’t a fruit of my imagination :))?

This is not very resource intensive since fail2ban will ban the IP after just a few tries. Make sure to disable password authentication in SSH app for added security.

I have a similar situation, all my services were running fine stably before upgrade.

I just had to reboot my server after many days of stable running (this is with reduced services). Will keep watching the situation. Will try to get Olimex involved also since this seems to be happening only on Pioneer hardware and with newer Debian.

It stops working at day 3 with matrix synapse off. Here are some logs before the reboot:

The last log is about WordPress, so if the problem is an app, it has to be WordPress.

I already disabled password authentication, but it continues, as you can see in the log and every time is different IP.

I did the same thing, but I disabled WordPress instead Matrix Synapse and my FB is working already 5th day without any problems. So the problem should be WordPress.

It hangs another 2 times with WordPress off, so I don’t know what is the problem… I see also that I’m writing to myself, and I’m starting to get bored… I like my Freedombox, but I’m considering to try another operating system for home server.

I suppose the problem is with the recent kernel + hardware. Other OSes might also face a similar issue. I shall try to get Olimex involved, they might be able to help with the issue.
